Electrocardiographic detection of left atrial enlargement in arterial hypertension: re-calibration against cardiac magnetic resonance
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background Both American and European guidelines on the management of arterial hypertension advise that an electrocardiogram (ECG) be routinely performed in all patients with arterial hypertension. The ECG may demonstrate evidence of left atrial enlargement (LAE), which has adverse prognostic implications in hypertension. We sought to determine the accuracy of 5 ECG criteria of LAE in a hypertensive cohort relative to cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) gold-standard. We also sought to investigate the confounding effect of obesity.

Brain Structural Changes Caused by Autism Spectrum Disorder Based on Volumetric Analysis of Magnetic Resonance Images: A Review Study
Background and purpose: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a psychiatric disorder which occurs in early years of life and causes various individual and social problems. Early detection of autism would help in taking necessary precautions and preventing its adverse side effects. Methods & Materials: In this paper, we reviewed the articles that have investigated brain structural changes caused by...
متن کاملThe right atrium value in patients operated for tetralogy of Fallot
Background Left atrium enlargement is directly proportional to the severity of underlying clinical (or subclinical) cardiovascular disease. Right atrium (RA) measurements are not routinely performed despite their prognostic value has been demonstrated in chronic heart failure, atrial and pulmonary arterial hypertension. The aim of the study was to evaluate RA dimensions and volumes by cardiac M...
متن کاملAccuracy of electrocardiographic criteria for atrial enlargement: validation with cardiovascular magnetic resonance
BACKGROUND Anatomic atrial enlargement is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. However, atrial enlargement may not correlate with clinical measures such as electrocardiographic (ECG) criteria. Past studies correlating ECG criteria with anatomic measures mainly used inferior M-mode or two-dimensional echocardiographic data. We sought to determine the accuracy of the ECG to predic...
متن کاملSensitivity and specificity of ECG criteria of left atrial enlargement in comparison to cardiac magnetic resonance in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
Background. In patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), left atrial (LA) enlargement has been related to increased risk of sudden cardiac death. Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) is the method of choice in the assessment of LA size and volume. However, initial assessment of LA enlargement is often made by means of ECG criteria including P wave analysis in leads II and V1. The aim of the ...
متن کاملClinical Diagnosis of Electrical Versus Anatomic Left Ventricular Hypertrophy
Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) can develop in association with chronic arterial hypertension and other cardiovascular disorders and is a well-established risk factor for cardiac arrhythmias, cardiovascular events, and mortality. Over 4 decades ago the Framingham Heart Study reported that electrocardiographic evidence of LVH (ECG LVH) was associated with 3to 4-fold increase in cardiovascular...
